So what are the five regions of the United States? They are the Northwest Region, The Southeast Region, The Midwest Region, The Southwest Region, and the Western Region. The United States is a vast and diverse country. Our Five Regions of the United States Worksheets printable will provide a visual and also make studying the different regions easier. As you travel the various regions of the United States, it can feel like you’re traveling through different worlds.

To help make sense of this complexity, geographers have divided the US states into five distinct regions – the Northeast, South, Midwest, West, and Alaska/Hawaii. Let’s explore each.

What are the Different Regions of the United States of America?

These five regions make up an important part of American life each one offering something different than any other place on earth. Whether it’s taking a beach vacation on Maui, Hawaii, or exploring wildflower blooms in South Dakota there’s something special waiting just around every corner.

The Northeast Region

The Northeast region of the US encompasses 11 states that stretch from Maine to Maryland. The eleven states located on the eastern seaboard are the New England states and they include Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

This area is known for its bustling cities like Manhattan and Philadelphia as well as its picturesque small towns like Kennebunkport and Bar Harbor.  This region is bordered by Canada. The climate in this area consists of snowy, below-freezing winters and cool, comfortable summers.

There are plenty of places to explore in this region including Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia and the iconic Statue of Liberty in New York City. It is well known for its historical sites, iconic landmarks, and major cities such as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. 

This area is also home to some of America’s most prestigious colleges and universities including Harvard University in Cambridge Massachusetts and Yale University in New Haven Connecticut. While this area is predominantly urbanized due to its high population density there are still plenty of places to get away from it all such as Acadia National Park in Maine or Adirondack State Park in New York State.

The Southeast Region of the United States

The Southeast region is located in the southeastern corner of the country and consists of 12 states. This region includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

This region has a variety of climates from the subtropical Gulf of Mexico in Florida where hurricanes can commonly occur to temperate Virginia. Some geographical features of this region include the Atlantic Ocean, the Mississippi River, and the Appalachian Mountains. There are many great attractions here such as Disney World in Florida or Stone Mountain Park in Georgia.

The food is also fantastic here—you can get some delicious Southern cooking from grits to gumbo! If you’re looking for some outdoor adventures you can explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or take a trip down the Mississippi River during the very hot summers.

This region is also known for its warm climate, sandy beaches, and vibrant cities like Miami and Atlanta that offer many kinds of activities. The economy here is largely driven by tourism due to its proximity to popular vacation destinations like Disney World in Orlando.

The Midwest Region of the United States

The Midwest region is located in the central part of the country and consists of 12 states including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

This area is known for its wide open spaces that stretch from horizon to horizon as well as its charming small towns like Galena, Illinois, or Hannibal, Missouri where Mark Twain grew up. The regional climate is cold and snowy, especially in the Northern States.

Don’t forget about Chicago either—this city has some amazing attractions such as Navy Pier or Willis Tower that will keep you entertained for days. This region has an industrial history that dates back to the 19th century when factories began popping up around major cities like Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit. Today this region continues to be an important manufacturing hub with some of America’s largest companies calling it home such as Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation.

The Southwest Region of the United States

The Southwest region is located in the southwestern part of the country and consists of four states including Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. It’s warm here all year round so you can escape to this area no matter what time it is! Take a road trip out west where you can explore ancient ruins at Mesa Verde National Park or the Grand Canyon in Arizona or wander through Old Town Albuquerque in New Mexico.

The Western Region of the United States

Finally, we have the Western Region which encompasses 11 states. The West Coast Region includes California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Hawaii, and Alaska. Each state has its own unique history and culture that make it special in its own way.

This part of America is known for its rugged landscapes like Yosemite National Park in the Golden State of California or Crater Lake Oregon. There are plenty of other places worth visiting, too like Las Vegas, Nevada Seattle, Washington San Francisco, California, and Portland, Oregon.

This area has always been considered a very wild frontier full of ruggedness & beauty alike with amazing sites from the Rocky Mountains out towards the Pacific Ocean Coastlines. Popular cities here range from Los Angeles through San Francisco all the way up northward towards Portland, Oregon for a unique mix of artsy cultural scenes much different from what is seen in any other part of the country. 

No matter what type of traveler you are there’s something special waiting just around every corner when it comes to exploring these five regions of the United States.
