There are 23 words in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The original US Pledge of Allegiance didn’t contain the word God. The word God was added in 1954. Congress wanted to reassure the American people that the United States was one nation under God.

The original Pledge to the Flag was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy. The pledge was originally published in a children’s magazine to be recited at the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in America.

The words of the pledge were later modified by Congress, and it wasn’t until 1942 that the pledge was officially adopted by the US government. Bellamy’s original words were meant to instill a sense of patriotism and loyalty to the country, and his legacy continues to be felt today.

Every time we recite the Pledge of Allegiance, we honor the memory of Francis Bellamy and his dedication to America.
