How Can You Use Diagraphs to Teach Sounds and Letters?
A digraph is made up of two letters that sound the same. There are only three sounds when you try to sound out a word, such as “ship”: /sh/, /i/, and /p/. It is a digraph since hearing the distinct letter sounds of /s/ and /h/is impossible.
It’s a blend if you can still distinguish the individual sounds that make up a letter combination, such as “fr,” as in frog:/f/ /r/ /o/ /g/.
Flashcard matching games are an excellent way to practice consonant digraphs. Make digraph cards (such as “th,” “ch,” and “sh”) and ask your youngster to match the cards to images of words that contain those digraphs.
