2. Queen of Katwe

A true story about Phiona Mutesi, a girl from the slums of Kampala, Uganda, who discovers a talent for chess and rises to become a national champion.

While chess isn’t pure math, the film is built around strategic and logical thinking, pattern recognition, and the kind of systematic problem-solving that overlaps heavily with mathematical reasoning. It’s a genuinely Disney-produced film, and one of the few family-friendly, PG-rated movie options on this list.

3. Hidden Figures

This film follows three brilliant Black women mathematicians and engineers at NASA, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, whose calculations were essential to launching astronaut John Glenn into orbit during the early days of the Space Race.

It’s inspiring, historically grounded, and appropriate for middle schoolers and up. Since Hidden Figures was originally a 20th Century Fox film, it moved to Disney Plus after Disney’s acquisition of Fox, which is also why it wasn’t always available here.

4. Brain Games
