How to Use These Free Watercolor Templates Step by Step
Using your free printable watercolor templates is simple and enjoyable — here is exactly how to get started for beautiful results every single time!
Step 1 — Download and Print Your Template
Click the download button below to grab your free PDF watercolor templates. Print on standard letter-size paper for a quick practice session or on watercolor paper for a more polished finished piece. I always recommend printing on at least 65lb cardstock or watercolor paper for the best painting experience!
Step 2 — Tape Your Paper Down
Before you start painting, tape the edges of your printed template to a flat surface — a wooden board, clipboard, or even a hard-covered book works perfectly. Use painter’s tape or washi tape around all four edges. This simple step prevents the paper from wrinkling and buckling when wet paint is applied, giving you a much smoother, more professional finish!
Step 3 — Gather Your Supplies
You do not need expensive supplies to create beautiful watercolor art! Here is everything I recommend for the best experience with these templates:
- Watercolor paints — pan sets are perfect for beginners
- A variety of brush sizes — at least one thin detail brush and one medium wash brush
- A cup of clean water for rinsing brushes
- A palette or plate for mixing colors
- Paper towels for blotting excess water
- Your printed watercolor template
Step 4 — Start Light and Layer
One of the most important watercolor tips I can share is this — always start lighter than you think you need to! Watercolor is transparent, so you can always add more layers to deepen the color, but it is very difficult to lighten paint once it is on the page. Start with a watered-down wash of color and build up slowly for a gorgeous luminous result.
Step 5 — Let Each Layer Dry Completely
Patience is the secret ingredient in watercolor painting! Always let one layer dry completely before adding the next. If you add wet paint on top of wet paint, the colors will bleed together into muddy, unexpected results. Use a hair dryer on a low setting to speed up drying time between layers if you are feeling impatient — I do this all the time!
Step 6 — Add Details Last
Save your darkest colors and finest details for the very last step. Once your base layers are completely dry, use a thin detail brush to add shadows, outlines, and fine details that make your painting pop. This final step is what transforms a simple watercolor wash into a truly beautiful finished piece!
Step 7 — Remove the Tape and Admire Your Work
Once your painting is completely dry, carefully remove the painter’s tape by slowly peeling it back at a 45-degree angle. This reveals a clean white border around your finished artwork — and I promise the moment you peel that tape back is one of the most satisfying feelings in all of art!
