Supplies for Making the Banner

You only need a few basic craft supplies:

• White or colored cardstock
• Scissors

Cardstock is my first choice for a project like this because the flags will hang more neatly and are less likely to curl than regular printer paper.

How to Make a Printable Banner

The free printable welcome banner template already gives you the shape and lettering, so most of the project is personalizing and assembling it.

1. Prepare the Pages

Download the file and send all four pages to your printer.

Before starting, make sure your settings keep the page at its normal size rather than accidentally enlarging or cropping the flags.

Use white cardstock if kids will be filling in the patterns.

You can also experiment with light-colored cardstock if you want the display to already have a background shade before adding embellishments.

2. Personalize the Flags

Add your chosen colors before cutting everything out.

Keeping each flag attached to a full sheet gives kids more surface area to hold while they work and is usually easier than trying to personalize a loose triangle.

There is no required pattern.

For a coordinated look, choose three or four shades and repeat them across all seven characters.

For a kid-made version, put out a container of markers or crayons and let every section look different.

3. Cut Out Each Flag

Cut around the outside dashed lines of each triangular section.

There is no need to cut around the individual letters or background patterns—the entire triangle becomes one piece of the finished decoration.

Younger kids can help with the straight edges, although preschoolers and beginning cutters may need adult help around the corners.

4. Punch the Holes

Each flag has two marked spots near the upper corners to show where the cord should go.

Use a hole punch to make an opening in each marked area.

Try to keep the holes approximately the same distance from the top edge on every flag so the characters hang evenly.

5. Connect the Letters

Thread ribbon, yarn, or string through the holes.

Keep the characters in this order:

W – E – L – C – O – M – E

Before cutting your cord, leave extra length at both ends.

You’ll need that extra material to attach the finished piece to a wall, doorway, mantel, table, or wherever you plan to display it.

6. Adjust the Spacing

Slide the flags along the cord until the spacing looks right.

You can place the triangles close together for a compact arrangement or leave a small gap between each one to make the word stretch farther.

Once you’re happy with the spacing, hang it up.

Easy Banner Ideas for Decorating

Because the artwork starts with a simple monochrome base, you can make the same design look completely different depending on the materials you choose.

Create a Rainbow Version

Give each character its own shade.

For example, work through red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink across the seven sections.

This is an easy option for children’s parties, playrooms, or a back-to-school celebration.

Match a Party Color Scheme

Choose two or three shades from your party decorations and repeat them across the flags.

For example, alternate two tones from one section to the next or use the same palette on every patterned background.

Heavier paper is less likely to bend while hanging or tear around the punched holes.

Reinforce the Holes

If the decoration will be used repeatedly, place a small piece of clear tape over the hole before punching.

That gives the paper a little extra reinforcement where the cord pulls against it.

Laminate the Flags

Personalize and cut out the flags first, then laminate them.

After laminating, trim around the pieces again and re-punch the holes.

This works especially well for high-quality school decorations you want to use year after year.
