“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” — Ephesians 6:10-11

The Armor of God is one of the most vivid and instructive passages in the New Testament. Written by the Apostle Paul from prison in Rome, the letter to the Ephesians uses the image of a Roman soldier’s full battle armor as a metaphor for the spiritual protection available to every believer.

The passage was written to a church under real pressure — Ephesus was a center of spiritual opposition — and its message was deeply practical.

As a Certified Biblical Counselor, I find this passage particularly powerful because it addresses the source of spiritual struggle directly: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).

The armor is not decorative. It is functional. Each piece serves a specific defensive or offensive purpose.

The Six Pieces of the Armor of God — and What They Mean

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist.”

In Roman military armor, the belt was the foundational piece — it held everything else in place. Without the belt, the breastplate, sword, and other equipment had nothing to anchor to. Truth functions the same way in the Christian life.

When we are grounded in what is true — about God, about ourselves, about the world — everything else in our faith holds together more securely.

For crafts and ministry: the Belt of Truth design is a natural choice for a series opener. Use it on a tote bag for a women’s Bible study, a mug for a small group leader, or a banner to open a VBS unit on the Armor of God.

The Breastplate of Righteousness — Ephesians 6:14

“With the breastplate of righteousness in place.”

The breastplate covered the vital organs — the heart and lungs. In spiritual terms, righteousness protects the heart from the accusations and deceptions that would wound it most deeply. This includes both the righteousness we receive through faith in Christ and the practical righteousness of living with integrity day to day.

For crafts and ministry: the Breastplate of Righteousness design works well on shirts and iron-on projects — the piece of armor that covers the chest translated naturally to a wearable craft. A children’s ministry t-shirt series, one piece per week, is a popular use for this design.

The Shoes of Peace — Ephesians 6:15

“And with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.”

Roman soldiers wore sandals with thick soles and cleats — footwear designed for stability and forward movement. The Shoes of Peace represent being grounded in the gospel, which gives us both stability in difficult circumstances and the readiness to share what we know with others. You cannot advance if your footing is unstable.

For crafts and ministry: the Shoes of Peace design is a favorite for children’s crafts because kids immediately connect with shoes as a concrete object. Use it for a shoe-themed VBS craft, a footprint art project, or a tote bag for a children’s ministry team.

The Shield of Faith — Ephesians 6:16

“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

The Roman shield — the scutum — was large enough to cover most of the soldier’s body. When soldiers stood together and raised their shields, the shields could interlock to form a complete protective wall. Faith functions the same way: individually it protects us; together in community it creates something far stronger than any individual alone.

For crafts and ministry: the Shield of Faith is one of the most visually striking designs in the set. It works beautifully on wooden signs, canvas prints, and tote bags. For a group craft, have each child decorate their own Shield of Faith sign with their name, then display them together as a class or group wall.

The Helmet of Salvation — Ephesians 6:17

“Take the helmet of salvation.”

The helmet protects the mind — and the mind is precisely where many spiritual battles are fought.

The Helmet of Salvation reminds us that our security is grounded not in our feelings or circumstances but in the settled reality of our salvation in Christ. When doubt, fear, or lies attack our thinking, the helmet reminds us of what is unchangeably true.

For crafts and ministry: the Helmet of Salvation design is a natural fit for a journal cover, a Bible cover, or a framed print for a child’s bedroom. For Sunday school, combine it with a discussion about where we get our thoughts from and how we can test them against truth.

The Sword of the Spirit — Ephesians 6:17

“And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

The sword is the only offensive weapon in the armor of God — everything else is defensive. The word of God is not just a tool for defense against lies; it is active, living, and powerful (Hebrews 4:12).

Jesus himself used Scripture to respond to temptation in the wilderness. The Sword of the Spirit design is a reminder that knowing and speaking God’s word is the most powerful spiritual action available to a believer.

For crafts and ministry: the Sword of the Spirit design pairs naturally with Bible verse memorization activities, scripture journal covers, and VBS sword drills. For older students, pair it with a discussion of how to use Scripture practically in specific situations they face.

What to Make with the Armor of God SVGs

VBS unit craft series

Use one design per day across a five- or six-day VBS program. Each day, children make a craft featuring one piece of armor — a Shield of Faith sign, a Belt of Truth tote bag, a Sword of the Spirit journal cover — and by the end of the week they have a complete set of Armor of God crafts that reinforce each lesson.

Sunday school classroom display

Cut all six designs from vinyl or cardstock and mount them on a bulletin board with the corresponding Bible verse. A complete Armor of God display is one of the most impactful decorations a children’s ministry room can have — visitors understand immediately what is being taught.

Youth group end-of-year gifts

Each student receives a tote bag or mug customized with their choice of Armor of God design. Pair with a handwritten note about what that particular piece of armor means in their life for a personalized, meaningful gift.

Children’s ministry t-shirt series

Cut each design from heat transfer vinyl and apply to shirts — one piece per shirt, or all six on one shirt for a complete armor shirt. These are particularly popular for summer camp and VBS programs.

Personalized Bible covers and journal covers

The Helmet of Salvation and Sword of the Spirit designs work especially well on Bible covers and journal covers — cut from adhesive vinyl and applied to a plain cover, or used as a Print Then Cut sticker for an easy application.

Faith-based gifts for any occasion

The designs work for Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, Easter gifts, and everyday encouragement — a mug, a tote bag, or a framed print with one of the armor designs is a meaningful gift for any believer.

How to Use These SVG Files with Your Cricut

Step 1: Download and unzip the free file. Open the zip folder and extract the contents to a folder on your computer. You will see six subfolders — one per piece of armor — each containing the design in SVG, PNG, EPS, and PDF formats.

Step 2: Open Cricut Design Space and start a new project. Click the Upload button in the left toolbar, then click Upload Image. Browse to the SVG file for the design you want to use and click Open.

Step 3: Design Space will show a preview of the design. Click Save, then Insert Images to add the design to your canvas.

Step 4: Resize the design to fit your project. For a standard t-shirt, 10–12 inches wide works for an adult. For a mug, size the design to fit within the mug’s height. For a tote bag, 8–10 inches is usually right.

Step 5: Cut from your chosen material. These designs work with adhesive vinyl for mugs and signs, heat transfer vinyl (HTV) for shirts and tote bags, and cardstock for paper crafts and signs. Remember to mirror the design before cutting HTV.

Step 6: Apply your cut design to your project and press or adhere according to your material’s instructions.
