Make a Turkey Clothespin Craft

Yield: 1 Turkey Craft
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Active Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes

Turn a wooden clothespin into an adorable turkey clip—perfect for place cards, snack bags, or a fall bulletin board. Kids paint the clothespin, add simple paper features, and fan out colorful “feathers” using the free printable template, building fine-motor skills while creating a cute Thanksgiving keepsake.

Materials

  • Wooden clothespin (spring style)
  • Free Turkey Template (PDF), printer, paper (cardstock recommended)
  • Construction paper (assorted fall colors + yellow, red)
  • Brown paint + paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Glue (school glue or tacky glue)
  • Black marker (optional: googly eyes, mini magnet strip)

Instructions

  1. Paint the body
Open the clothespin and paint all visible sides brown. Stand it upright (pinched end down) or clip it to scrap cardboard to dry for 10–15 minutes. Add a second thin coat if needed.
  2. Print and cut the template.
Download the free turkey template and print at Actual Size (100%). Cut out the feather/wing pieces. Trace them onto different colors of construction paper (or print directly onto colored paper) and cut out the shapes.
  3. Make the eyes
Cut two small white circles for eyes and two tiny black circles for pupils, or draw pupils with a black marker. Glue the eyes near the top of the clothespin’s “head” area (the rounded end that opens and closes).
  4. Add beak and wattle
Cut a small yellow triangle for the beak and glue it just below the eyes. Cut a tiny red teardrop for the wattle and glue it along the side of the beak.
  5. Assemble the feathers
Arrange the template feathers into a fan shape behind the clothespin, largest in the center and smaller to the sides, overlapping slightly. Glue the feather pieces together first; let them set for a minute.
  6. Attach feathers to the clothespin.
Flip the clothespin over and glue the feather fan to the back so the colorful ends peek above the head. Press firmly; use a small piece of tape or a clothespin clip to hold while drying if needed.
  7. Finish & use
Add eyebrows or freckles with the marker if you like. Let everything dry completely. Clip your turkey to a place card, a treat bag, or add a magnet strip to the back for fridge décor.

Print tip: Cardstock makes the feather fan sturdier; keep your printer scale at 100% so the pieces fit the clothespin proportionally.
