Tips for Making the Best Butterfly-Shaped Pretzels

  • Use a microwave-safe bowl and heat your white chocolate chips in 30-second bursts. Stir in between each burst to ensure smooth, even melting. If the chocolate is too thick, you can stir in 1 tsp of coconut oil to thin it out.
  • Melted, smooth chocolate is easier to work with, especially when using a small spoon or a piping bag for detail work.
  • Make sure to line a large cookie sheet with waxed paper (or parchment paper) before placing your dipped pretzels to allow the chocolate to harden.
  • Want to go the extra mile? Add extra designs with colored chocolate, stars, or edible flowers for a truly look like beautiful finishing touch!

The Melting Process

Melting chocolate is easy, but here’s a quick refresher if you’re new to it:

  1. Place your candy melts, vanilla chips, or white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Microwave on high for 30 seconds, then stir.
  3. Microwave for another 30 seconds and stir again.
  4. If needed, add another 20 seconds until completely melted and smooth.

You can now divide the melted chocolate into bowls and tint them using food coloring to get creative shades for your pretzel wings.

Let’s Talk Shapes and Creativity

Here’s what makes these butterfly-shaped pretzels so unique:

The mini pretzel twists form the butterfly wings, perfect for holding vibrant melted candy.

The pretzel stick forms the body, giving you a crunchy base and an easy handle. Caramel candies add a chewy texture while forming the pretzel butterflies’ heads and bodies. The eyes and antenna made of chocolate chips and sprinkles bring your colorful butterflies to life!

How to Store Butterfly Treats

Place your pretzel butterflies on a cookie sheet with waxed paper and let them chill. Once set, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Avoid stacking them to prevent the melted chocolate decorations from smudging.

When the sun is blazing outside and you're craving something sweet, light and fun, it's time to create an edible treat. These Butterfly Chocolate Covered Pretzels are not just a dessert, but a true summertime treat on a plate. Crunchy crackers in bright chocolate and saltine stick crackers in caramel form graceful butterflies. Beautiful, delicious and incredibly easy! Perfect for summer parties and children's parties, brunches, buffets, picnics, theme days (butterfly day, garden party), DIY dessert for little guests - let them collect the butterflies themselves!

For the recipe, choose knot-shaped mini pretzel crackers, 2 for each butterfly. For the body, you will need stick crackers and caramel candies such as Soft Caramels or Weather’s Original Soft. For the coating, use easy-melt white chocolate in drops and food coloring. You can use sugar eyes or chocolate chips, different sprinkles to “liven up” and decorate the butterflies.

Ingredients

  • 6 cracker sticks
  • 12 pretzels
  • 9 caramel candies
  • 2/3 cup white chocolate in drops
  • food coloring
  • sprinkle balls
  • 12 chocolate chips for eyes
  • some brown sprinkles
  • valentines, flowers

Instructions

  1. Cut 3 caramel candies in half and slide them onto the cracker sticks to create the butterfly heads. Warm the remaining caramel candies in your hands, or microwave them for about 2 seconds until soft. Roll each softened caramel into a short rope and wrap it around the center of 2 pretzels to form the butterfly bodies.
  2. Melt about one-fourth of the white chocolate and tint it purple with food coloring. Line a board or tray with plastic wrap or parchment paper. Using a fork, dip each pretzel into the purple chocolate, then place it on the lined board. Let the coating set until firm.
  3. Melt another one-fourth of the white chocolate and tint it orange. Transfer it to a piping bag or small food-safe bag. Pipe the orange chocolate into the openings of the pretzels, then decorate with sprinkles while the chocolate is still soft.
  4. Melt the remaining white chocolate. Dip the cracker stick base into the melted chocolate and gently shake off the excess. Attach the pretzel wings, then add the chocolate chip eyes, Valentine candy mouth, and brown sprinkles for the butterfly details. Hold the wings in place until the chocolate begins to set, then chill the butterflies in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  5. Serving Ideas

These butterfly treats are easy to display and transport. Stand them upright in a glass or vase for a butterfly bouquet, or arrange them on a large dessert board with mint and flowers for a beautiful party centerpiece. You can also place them in a clear gift box with ribbon for a sweet edible gift for moms, friends, teachers, or coworkers.
