What ingredients are needed for the Mentos Explosion Experiment?
- 5 (2 liters) bottles of Fanta in 5 different flavors
- 5 sleeves Mentos candy
- 1 ¼ cup clear dishwashing liquid
- Food coloring (for enhanced dolor)
- 1 ¼ cup vinegar
- 1 ¼ cup baking soda
- Party cups
- Video camera or smartphone with video (for replay)
Note: Measurements for the dishwashing liquid, vinegar, and baking soda are approximate.
In order to analyze the results, have a video camera or smartphone with video capabilities available to capture the experiment.
Prepare the candy by removing it from the sleeve and placing one sleeve of candy into each cup.
Add ¼ cup baking soda to each cup with the Mentos.
Pour equal amounts of each different Fanta into its own cup.
To each cup of Fanta, add ¼ cup of dishwashing liquid and vinegar. Also, add drops of matching food coloring.
Simultaneously, drop the candy into the Fanta.
TIP: Use a level surface so the bottles don’t fall over.
