Bluey Pumpkin Stencils: Free Printable Carving Templates

Choose the circular design for a framed portrait effect, or use the larger close-up version when you want the artwork to fill more of the surface.

Carving should always be completed by an adult. Children can still participate by choosing a design, cleaning it, helping tape the design in place, or decorating a no-carve version with paint.

What’s Included?

The free PDF includes two full-page character designs:

  • A smiling Bluey face positioned inside a circular border
  • A larger close-up face with bold facial details

Each page is formatted for standard A4 or US letter-size paper, making it easy to resize if needed.

The circular artwork works especially well on a round pumpkin with a broad, smooth front. The close-up version fills more of the page and may be easier to enlarge, reduce, or position on an oval surface.

The pages can also be used for painted pumpkins, window decorations, paper crafts, classroom displays, and other personal Halloween projects.

Supplies Needed:

Gather the following supplies before beginning:

  • Template
  • Medium or large pumpkin
  • Printer paper
  • Clear tape or painter’s tape
  • Pushpin, thumbtack, or poking tool
  • Carving kit
  • Large spoon or scoop
  • Washable marker, optional
  • Paper towels
  • Battery-operated LED light

A small serrated saw is usually easier to control than a large kitchen knife. Use all sharp tools under close adult supervision and keep them away from children.

How to Use the Bluey Pumpkin Stencils

Choose and Print a Template

Download the PDF and select the Bluey face you would like to use.

Print the page on standard letter-size paper. Before attaching it, hold it against the surface to check the fit.

If the artwork is too large or too small, adjust the scale in your printer settings. Try printing at 80% for a smaller pumpkin or increase the scale for a larger one.

Avoid using “Fit to Page” without checking the preview, since that setting may change the size unexpectedly.

Prepare the Pumpkin

Choose one with a relatively smooth area large enough for the design.

Wash and dry the outside so the tape will stick. Remove the top or bottom, then scoop out the seeds, strings, and loose pulp.

Scrape the inside wall behind the design until it is thinner and reasonably even. A thinner carving surface is easier to cut and allows more light to shine through.

Do not leave the wall so thin that it becomes soft or unstable.

Position the Design

Place the page against the smoothest part of the surface.

Because paper is flat and the surface is curved, wrinkles may appear around the edges. Trim a few small slits into the blank margins so the paper can overlap slightly and follow the curve.

Do not trim through the actual design.

Secure the paper with several small pieces of tape. Check that the eyes, nose, mouth, and outer edges remain in the correct position before transferring the pumpkin pattern.

Transfer the Pattern

Use a pushpin or poking tool to create small holes along the important outlines.

Space the holes closely enough that the design remains easy to follow after the paper is removed. Pay particular attention to:

  • The shape of the ears
  • The eyebrows
  • The edges of the eyes
  • The nose
  • The mouth
  • The outer face and head markings

Carefully remove the paper once the entire pattern has been transferred.

Connect any difficult-to-see dots with a washable marker. This can help clarify the carving lines. ← Recommended

Decide Whether to Carve or Etch

The solid black and white areas can be interpreted in more than one way depending on the effect you want.

For a traditional glowing display, use the pattern as a guide and carve selected sections completely through the wall. Leave enough connected material to support the character’s facial features.

For an etched version, remove only the outer skin from selected areas instead of carving all the way through. This creates a softer glow and helps preserve delicate details.

You can also combine the two techniques:

  • Carve larger open areas
  • Etch smaller facial details
  • Leave narrow outlines intact

The official Bluey activity also recommends transferring the outline with pinpricks, carving through designated darker sections, and peeling away the skin in lighter areas to emphasize facial details.

Carve the Larger Sections First

Begin with the larger and less detailed sections of the pattern.

Use short, gentle sawing motions rather than forcing the tool through the surface. Work gradually from the center outward.

Save the smaller areas around the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and smile until you feel comfortable with the tool.

Push carved pieces inward rather than pulling them outward through the front. Pulling can place pressure on the narrow sections that remain.

Check the Design as You Work

Place an LED light inside periodically and dim the room.

The light will reveal areas that may need:

  • A cleaner edge
  • Additional thinning
  • Deeper etching
  • A slightly larger opening

It is easier to correct small areas during the process than to repair an area that has been removed accidentally.

Light and Display

Brush away loose pieces and gently wipe the finished surface.

Place a battery-operated LED light inside rather than an open flame, particularly when children or pets will be nearby.

Display the finished design on a stable porch, table, or windowsill where it can be seen without becoming a tripping hazard.

Which Design Should You Choose?

Circular Bluey Face

The circular design gives a framed portrait effect and gives the finished display a clearly defined outer shape.

Choose this template when:

  • The carving surface is round
  • You want the design centered
  • You prefer a smaller amount of carving
  • You want a neat border around the character

The circular outline may also help position the design evenly.

Large Close-Up Design

The second template features a larger face that fills most of the page.

Choose this version when:

  • You have a medium or large pumpkin
  • You want the face to be visible from farther away
  • You prefer bold facial features
  • You have a tall or oval carving surface

Because this artwork contains fewer surrounding elements, it also works well for painted or etched displays.

Tips for a Cleaner Design

Use a Smooth Pumpkin

Deep ridges can distort the face and make the paper difficult to attach. Look for one with at least one broad, relatively flat area.

Thin the Inside

Rather than pressing harder with the carving tool, scrape more pulp from the inner wall behind the design. This helps reduce resistance and can result in cleaner edges.

Use Small Pieces of Tape

Several short strips usually hold the paper in place better than one long strip.

Start with the Eyes and Face Placement

Before transferring the entire design, make sure the eyes, nose, and mouth appear straight. Small shifts in these areas can change the expression significantly.

Protect Narrow Sections

Avoid carving away every dark line automatically. Look at the entire design first and identify which sections must remain connected to support the face.

Work Slowly Around the Ears

The pointed ears create narrow angles near the top of the design. Carve these areas gradually so the tips and surrounding sections remain intact.

Keep Toothpicks Nearby

When a small piece breaks accidentally, a toothpick can sometimes be inserted from the back to hold it in position.

Illuminate It with an LED

Choose an LED tea light for safe illumination instead of using a candle with an open flame.

No-Carve Idea

You do not have to carve one to use these designs.

A painted version is a safer option for preschoolers, classroom groups, or families who want the display to last longer.

How to Paint the Design

  1. Use the selected design.
  2. Cut around the outside of the main design.
  3. Position it on the surface.
  4. Trace the important features with a washable marker.
  5. Remove the stencil.
  6. Paint the face using blue, light blue, black, white, and tan paint.
  7. Allow each section to dry before adding smaller details.

Adults can trace the design, while children help fill in the larger areas with paint.

You can also paint the surface blue first before adding the facial details.

Decorating Ideas for Younger Children

Children who are too young to carve can still help create the display.

They can:

  • Choose which design to use
  • Scoop seeds with a spoon
  • Sort and wash the seeds for roasting
  • Hold pieces of tape
  • Paint a no-carve version
  • Color a copy of the stencil
  • Add Bluey-inspired colors to mini pumpkins
  • Add paper paw prints to the display
  • Place battery-operated lights inside finished carvings

An adult should handle pushpins, carving tools, knives, and any other sharp supplies.

Ways to Use the Designs Without a Pumpkin

The designs can be reused for several seasonal activities.

Window Decoration

Trace the design onto black construction paper and carefully trim it out. Tape it to a window over blue tissue paper for a simple seasonal silhouette.

Paper Plate Craft

Reduce the size and use the face as a tracing guide for a paper plate character activity.

Coloring Page

Use the design and let children add Bluey’s familiar shades of blue. They can decorate the background with bats, candy, spooky trees, or costumes.

Classroom Door Display

Enlarge the design and use it as the centerpiece of a child-friendly bulletin board.

Painted Wooden Sign

Transfer the design to a wooden plaque and paint it for personal seasonal décor.

Bluey Party Activity

Place copies at an activity table where children can color and decorate the character during a Bluey-themed or seasonal party.

How to Help a Carved Pumpkin Last Longer

Carved ones naturally begin to soften, but a few steps may help extend the display.

  • Start with a firm one without bruises or soft spots.
  • Keep it in a cool, shaded location.
  • Bring it inside during unusually warm weather.
  • Use a paper towel to gently remove moisture from the carved edges.
  • Use a battery-operated LED light in place of a candle.
  • Refrigerate it overnight when space allows.
  • Avoid placing it directly in strong sunlight.
  • Do not display one that has developed mold, a strong odor, leaking liquid, or very soft areas.

More Pumpkin Printables to Check Out

If you enjoyed these Bluey Pumpkin Stencils, here are more pumpkin carving templates and Halloween printables that are perfect for decorating pumpkins and celebrating the spooky season.

The PDF includes two face designs, with one design on each page.

Choose your favorite version, find a smooth pumpkin, and use the artwork as a guide for carving, etching, or painting. Whether it glows on the porch or becomes part of a no-carve family activity, the familiar expression adds a playful touch to Halloween.

Adult supervision is required for all carving and stencil-transfer steps involving sharp tools.

Bluey and related characters are trademarks of their respective owners. This independent printable is intended for personal, noncommercial use and is not sponsored, licensed, or endorsed by the trademark owner.

Are these free?

Of course. The printable PDF contains two Bluey face designs that you can download for personal use.

What size paper should I use?

Use standard 8.5-by-11-inch letter-size paper. You can change the scale in your printer settings to fit a smaller or larger pumpkin.

Does the download include Bingo?

The supplied PDF includes two versions of Bluey rather than a separate Bingo design. One is framed inside a circle, and the other is a larger close-up face.
This should be stated clearly in the post rather than promising a Bingo stencil that is not included.

Should I cut out the black or white areas?

Treat the printable as a pattern rather than assuming every area of one color must be removed. Decide which sections will be completely carved, which will be etched, and which must remain connected.
When using a cut-through pattern, the official Bluey instructions direct carvers to carve through the darker designated sections and peel away the skin in lighter areas. This artwork is different, however, so examine the connections before making the first cut.

Can beginners use these stencils?

Yes, although the facial details require patience. Beginners may find the larger close-up face easier to transfer because the features are bold and widely spaced.
A painted or etched version is another good starting option.

Can children carve one?

Children can help with the non-sharp parts of the activity, but an adult should handle carving tools, pushpins, knives, and detailed carving.

Can I use the stencil on a foam pumpkin?

Yes. The artwork can be transferred to a foam pumpkin, although foam-carving tools and techniques may differ from those used with a real one.

Can I use the design more than once?

Yes. Use a fresh copy for each project so the pattern stays clear and easy to position.

Why does the paper wrinkle?

Paper is flat while the surface is curved. Add several short slits around the blank margins, then overlap the edges slightly as you tape it in place.

What should I do if part of the design breaks?

A small broken section may be reattached with a toothpick inserted from behind. If a larger area breaks, adjust the surrounding carving stencil or turn that detail into a larger glowing section.

Can I use the printable for painting instead of pumpkin carving?

Yes. Trace the main features onto the surface and fill them with craft paint. This is especially useful for younger children and helps the finished design last longer.
