Edible Play Dough (Disney Theme)
Are you looking for an indoor activity this summer? One of my kids’ favorite activities is playing with play dough! As their creative teacher and homeschooling mama, I also love this activity. This edible play dough would be a hit at any child’s party or fun for a summer craft activity.
Edible play dough could be used at a Disney-themed birthday party, or you could choose any cookie cutter shape your child might enjoy. And if you know a preschool teacher looking for fun kids activities for her students, this homemade playdough recipe could be the answer! Incredibly simple to whip up and keep in the fridge, homemade play dough is a lifesaver.
You could also add drops of food coloring to the edible play dough to brighten things up a bit. Colorful sprinkles on top add even more fun to the process! And, of course, homemade play dough is non-toxic, too!
What Is Edible Playdough Made of?
You can make play dohs with a wide variety of ingredients. But most standard doughs require a lot of salt. Even commercial play dough does. This is because salt aids in the binding and moisture retention of other component proteins, such as flour.
This will surely keep your kids busy on an afternoon party. Remember, if you are also looking for a gift to give to small children, just make sure you have an airtight food storage container in place to keep this homemade playdough clean and ready to use. When stored properly, homemade playdough will last for six months.

Food ingredients you will need for play dough:
- White Frosting
- Cornstarch
- Salt
- Lukewarm Water
- Colored Sprinkles
- Food Colouring
- Storage Containers
- Food Cookie Cutters
To make more play dough, follow the simple recipe and proportions: one part frosting and three parts cornstarch.
Put one teaspoon of cornstarch and one tablespoon of water in a bowl mix and stir until the cornstarch is fully dissolved. If you have an aid mixer, you can use it too.
Add your ½ cup frosting to the bowl and stir with a spoon to combine.
Add the rest of your cornstarch ½ cup until the dough mixture thickens, then finish working your play dough (cornstarch mixture) by hand. A little makes the dough soft and stretchy. If you want to make more, add three tablespoons of cornstarch in a large mixing bowl until a thick dough forms.
Make small bowls of Play-Doh and flatten the dough. We all love a solid basic recipe, but we also know that kids really enjoy the opportunity to experiment with new tastes, ingredients, and textures. To make balls of playdough, brush a bit of hot water over the lumpy mixture and incorporate it in with kneading. Sure, kids don’t like crumbly texture.
After the dough is a bit more solid, use cookie cutters and roll the dough into balls. After you push the food cutter down, wiggle it a little bit to make a clean shape, then twist it to separate the outer part of the dough. Push the shape gently with your finger out of the food cutter.
Note: You can also add some food colouring, 1-2 drops of colors of your favorite to add more colors if you like as a suggestion.
Decorate with colorful sprinkles! This bin of colorful play dough will create so much fun and creativity!
If your edible play dough crumbles or gets thick, soften it with a little extra water. If it is too sticky, add a little more cornstarch until it softens.
Discard it after playtime is over. While this play dough is “edible” and completely food, it is not meant to be eaten in large quantities! Enjoy your colorful play dough!
This fun Recipe for Crayon Play-dough would also be a fun summer craft for kids!
You can store it in an airtight container until ready to use. I would love to hear if your kids enjoyed making this play dough. You can leave a comment below.
