Why is this slime fluffy?

Foaming shaving cream traps tiny air bubbles in the glue mixture, giving the slime a lighter, puffier texture. Add the activator gradually, as the airy mixture may need slightly more; too much will make it stiff.

The extra fluffiness is most noticeable on the first day. As the trapped air escapes, the slime will lose some volume but may remain stretchy.

Unicorn Fluffy Slime Ingredients

How to Make Slime

Cover the table before starting because food coloring can stain some surfaces and fabrics.

1. Mix the glue and foaming cream

Pour the clear glue into a large bowl. Add the foaming cream and gently fold the ingredients together until the mixture is even and no glue streaks remain.

Use a traditional foaming product rather than shaving gel. Gel will not create the same airy consistency.

2. Mix in the baking soda

Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and mix well until evenly distributed throughout the bowl.

3. Gradually add the activator

Pour in a little activating solution, then mix well before adding any more. Continue adding it a little at a time until the mixture begins to pull away from the bowl and gather around the spoon.

Stop when it forms a soft, sticky ball. You may not need the full 1 1/2 tablespoons. Fresh slime often becomes less sticky as you work it, so do not add extra activator too quickly.

4. Work the mixture by hand

Pull, fold, and work the mixture by hand for about three to five minutes, continuing until the texture feels right. If it still coats your fingers after thorough kneading, add only a few drops of contact solution and work it again.

Adding too much can make slime firm and prone to tearing, so stop once you reach the right consistency.

5. Add the unicorn colors

Reserve the largest portion for the face. Divide the remaining slime among four or five small bowls.

Add one drop of food coloring to each portion and knead them separately. Pink, purple, blue, yellow, and pale green create a cheerful palette, but children can choose any colors they like.

You could also use 3 different colors for a simpler version, or use a single color, such as pink slime. Wear gloves if you are concerned about temporary staining.

Sprinkle in a little glitter now if you want extra sparkle. For a different look, glitter glue can add sparkle, although it may change the texture and amount of activator needed.

6. Shape the unicorn

Flatten the large uncolored portion into a rounded face. Arrange the colored portions around it as a mane and shape a small piece into a horn. Gently press the jumbo wiggly eyes onto the face.

The eyes are removable decorations. Take them off before storage and keep all small pieces away from children who may put them in their mouths.

The colors will eventually blend when played with, so photograph the finished character before play begins. Once combined, the colorful swirls can even resemble whimsical “unicorn poop” slime.

How to Fix Fluffy Slime

Too sticky

Work it for another two or three minutes. If it still coats your fingers, add a few drops of contact solution and knead again.

Too stiff or tearing

Too much activator is the likely cause. Work in a small amount of foaming cream or a tiny dab of unscented lotion. A drop of baby oil or lotion may also help soften a firm batch, but severely overactivated slime may not return to its original texture.

Not forming slime

Check that your solution contains boric acid and sodium borate and that you used PVA school glue. A saline product without the correct ingredients will not activate the mixture.

Not fluffy enough

Fold in a little more foaming shaving cream before the mixture is fully activated. You may then need a few more drops of solution.

Muddy colors

Keep the colored portions side by side rather than repeatedly combining them. Several shades will eventually blend into one color.

Slime Safety

• Adults should measure and handle the activating solution.
• Read and follow all product labels.
• Do not allow children to eat or taste slime.
• Avoid contact with eyes and hair, and keep the mixture off pets, carpeting, furniture fabric, and unsealed wooden surfaces.
