White cardstock is recommended for the animals and standing habitat pieces. Regular printer paper can be used for the background.
Adult supervision is required if a craft knife or hot glue is used.

How to Make an African Savanna Shoebox Diorama
Choose a Shoebox
Remove the lid and place the shoebox on one of its long sides with the opening facing forward.
The back and side walls will hold the savanna background. The bottom of the box will become the grassland.
A small shipping box or cardboard display box can be substituted if you do not have a shoebox.
Prepare the Background
Cover the back and inside walls with the printable savanna backdrop.
You can also use blue construction paper or paint the inside walls to create the sky. A pale blue sky works well for a daytime habitat, while orange and yellow can create a savanna sunset.
Smooth each piece carefully as you glue it to prevent wrinkles and air bubbles.
Make the Savanna Ground
Cover the bottom of the box with tan, golden yellow, or light brown construction paper.
For additional texture, spread a thin layer of school glue over the surface and sprinkle clean craft sand or fine gravel on top. Shake away the excess after the glue dries.
Raffia, dried grass, or short strips of tan paper can be used to create clumps of grass.
Print the Diorama Pieces
Print the nine-page PDF.
Use white cardstock for pieces that will stand upright. Select “actual size” or “100%” in your printer settings unless the printable includes different instructions.
Print one test page before printing the entire pack to confirm that the margins and scale are correct.
Color the Animals and Scenery
Color the printable animals, trees, grasses, rocks, and other habitat elements.
Children can look at wildlife photographs for color inspiration. Encourage them to notice details such as:
- The zebra’s black-and-white stripes
- The giraffe’s patterned coat
- The elephant’s gray skin
- The lion’s tawny coloring
- The rhinoceros’s thick gray or brownish skin
- The baobab’s wide trunk and spreading branches
- The savanna’s golden dry-season grasses
The savanna also has a rainy season when grasses may appear greener. Either a dry-season or wet-season scene can be accurate.
Cut Out the Pieces
Carefully cut around the outside of each printable element.
Keep all the cutouts in a shallow container or envelope until assembly. Small grass, cloud, and rock pieces can easily become misplaced.
Young children may need an adult to cut the animals while they work on the larger scenery.
Plan the Habitat
Arrange the pieces inside the box before gluing them down.
Place:
- Trees and taller grass near the back or sides
- Rocks and short grasses along the ground
- Giraffes near trees
- Zebras in an open grassland area
- Elephants near an open area or water source
- Lions where they can use the grass as cover
- Rhinoceroses on the ground with enough open space
The exact arrangement can be creative, but encourage students to think about how each animal uses the habitat.
Make the Pieces Stand Up
Create a small folded tab at the bottom of each animal.
Bend the tab backward and glue it to the diorama floor. This allows the animal to remain upright.
For pieces without a tab, glue a small L-shaped strip of cardstock to the back. Attach the lower portion of the strip to the ground.
Place some animals close to the front, others in the middle, and a few near the back to create depth.
Add Trees, Grass, and Rocks
Glue the baobab tree and other tall scenery to the background or support them with folded cardstock tabs.
Arrange grass and rocks around the animals. Avoid placing every piece in one line, since scattered placement will look more natural.
Add a Watering Hole
Cut a small oval from blue paper or blue cellophane.
Glue it flat to the savanna floor and add a narrow border of sand, brown paper, or pebbles. Place animals such as elephants and zebras nearby.
A flat paper watering hole is simpler and safer than cutting through the bottom of the shoebox or using resin.
Label the Project
For a school assignment, add a title to the outside of the box:

What Is an African Savanna?
A savanna is a tropical grassland with grasses, scattered trees, and a climate shaped by wet and dry seasons.
African savannas are warm throughout the year. Most rainfall occurs during part of the year, followed by a long dry season. The limited and seasonal rainfall prevents dense forests from covering the landscape.
The savanna is not the same as a desert or rainforest:

Baobab Trees
Baobabs are known for their enormous trunks and distinctive branching shape. They are well adapted to seasonal environments and can store water in their trunks.
Acacia Trees
Various trees commonly described as acacias grow in African savannas. Their small leaves and thorns help them tolerate dry conditions and browsing animals.
Savanna Grasses
Grasses provide food for zebras, wildebeest, antelope, and other grazing animals.
After rain, the grasses may grow green and abundant. During the dry season, they often become golden or brown.

Animals of the African Savanna

Lions
Lions are social cats that usually live in groups called prides. They are predators that hunt animals such as zebras, wildebeest, and antelope.
